LDV D90 diesel engine, towing and fuel use

The D90 borrows its 2.5-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel from the Terron 9 and updated T60 utes. It makes 163kW and 520Nm, up from 160kW and 480Nm in the 2.0-litre diesel the SUV dropped in 2024.

Every diesel D90 gets an eight-speed torque converter automatic and four-wheel drive that can switch between 2WD and 4WD on the move. Braked towing rises to 3500kg with a 350kg towball limit, up from 3100kg for the old diesel and 3000kg for the petrol models.

Petrol buyers keep the 184kW/410Nm 2.0-litre turbo four and eight-speed auto, in rear-wheel drive or 4WD. It’s rated at 9.1L/100km as a 2WD and 9.4L/100km as a 4WD.

Why diesel matters for the D90

Large body-on-frame SUVs in Australia run almost entirely on diesel. GWM data shows 92% of the segment’s sales last year were diesel, and the D90 has struggled without one. LDV has reported 1958 D90 sales so far this year, down 22.5%, against 16,203 for the Ford Everest, 15,665 for the Toyota Prado and 10,556 for the Isuzu MU-X.

“Customers have been asking for the return of diesel power to the LDV D90 ever since it was paused from our line-up two years ago,” LDV Australia general manager Dinesh Chinnappa said.

Even at full price, the Executive diesel costs less than four-wheel-drive versions of all three rivals.
